Mexico
Mexico with over 100 million inhabitants forms not only a giant market but also has direct access to the US Market through NAFTA. Mexico's GDP in dollar terms represents US$ 840 bn at the end of 2006, almost equalling Brazil. Current President Felipe Calderón (PAN) who took office on Dec. 1st 2006, has most of his efforts focussed on providing security, new jobs, education, restructuring of the energy sector and fiscal reform among other things.
To expand employment and training opportunities, the Mexican government has established a 'maquiladora' program, which allows duty free imports of machinery, parts and raw materials for re-export to the US or elsewhere. The sector is now Mexico's largest generator of export revenues and increasingly sophisticated and high-tech. The first generation maquila operations (textiles and clothing) have been replaced by factories that are home to some of the world's largest electronics and car components companies. Further market opportunities emerge in sectors such as infrastructure, environment, financial services, telecom, agriculture, tourism and industry.
