BarceLyon express: new container rail service

22.01.2009

BarceLyon express: the new container rail service between the ports of Barcelona and Lyon will be launched as one of the new initiatives of the Port de Barcelona to promote European rail transport.

Lyon (Venisseux) has an important logistic hub in France, with train connections to Le Havre and Antwerp, and is now being linked with the port of Barcelona, terminals TERCAT (Hutchison) and TCB, with excellent connection to the harbour of Asia, America and countries around the Mediterranean Sea.

* Start: 3 February 2009
* Three trains a week in both directions (expansion to daily trains in 2009)
* Multiline with both see- and continental freight
* All types of containers, tanks and ADR (no swap-bodies)

Advantages

  • Alternative for sea freight: freight which now arrives and leaves at Rotterdam and Antwerp can be diverted via Barcelona (saves time and money)
  • Road transport: in Lyon or Barcelona the container is loaded on the train: this saves money and is more environmentally friendly.
  • Against Marseille/Fos (the two harbours which are closer to Lyon): Barcelona is less strike sensitive and has more sea connections
