Demand for green building technologies in Argentina

Following the trend to save energy, Argentina has started focusing on green building technologies. It is one of 15 countries with a Green Building Council. According to the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), there are 12 LEED registered projects in Argentina. These projects incorporate various segments such as:

  • Renewable energy
  • Green building products (paints, flooring and roofing products)
  • Water, heating and ventilation appliances
  • Waste management
  • Design.

Residential and commercial buildings consume 54 and 46 percent, respectively, of the total energy. 38 percent of the total amount of carbon dioxide in Argentina can be attributed to buildings, 21 percent from homes and 17.5 percent from commercial uses. Buildings account for 12.2 percent of the total amount of water consumed per day in Argentina.

Considering these statistics, reducing the amount of natural resources buildings consume and the amount of pollution released is crucial for future sustainability. Green building is a recent concept in Argentina and thus remains in the development stages. Over the future years, an active role of construction associations will increase the demand for green building in Argentina. Because Argentina manufactures low-technology building products, there is a large market for specialized and cutting edge technologies. Best prospects for Argentine green building market are:

  • Solar thermal panels for building heating and hot water production
  • Photovoltaic panels
  • Insulation products and energy saving systems for residential and industrial applications
  • Geothermal energy for building heating applications
  • Wood construction.
